Coulomb Gap in the Quantum Hall Insulator

We calculate numerically the spectrum of disordered electrons in the lowest Landau level at filling factor 1/5 using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation for systems containing up to 400 flux quanta. Special attention is paid to the correct treatment of the q = 0 component of the Coulomb interaction. For sufficiently strong disorder, the system is an insulator at this filling factor. ...

Quantum Hall to insulator transition in the bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnet.

We describe a phase transition of the bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnet at nu=1. In the presence of static disorder (modeled by a periodic potential), bosonic S=1/2 spinons undergo a superfluid-insulator transition while preserving ferromagnetism. The Mott insulating phase has an emergent U(1) photon, and the transition is between Higgs and Coulomb phases of this photon. Consequences for charge ...

Insulator-quantum Hall transitionin monolayer epitaxial graphene.

We report on magneto-transport measurements on low-density, large-area monolayer epitaxial graphene devices grown on SiC. We observe temperature (T)-independent crossing points in the longitudinal resistivity ρxx, which are signatures of the insulator-quantum Hall (I-QH) transition, in all three devices. Upon converting the raw data into longitudinal and Hall conductivities σxx and σxy, in the ...

Reflection symmetry and quantized Hall resistivity near the quantum Hall transition

We present direct numerical evidence for reflection symmetry of longitudinal resistivity rxx and quantized Hall resistivity rxy near the transition between the n51 quantum Hall state and insulator, in accord with recent experiments. Our results show that a universal scaling behavior of conductances, sxx and sxy , in the transition regime decide the reflection symmetry of rxx and quantization of...

Explanation for the resistivity law in quantum Hall systems.

We consider a 2D electron system in a strong magnetic field, where the local Hall resistivity ρxy(r) is a function of position and ρxx(r) is small compared to ρxy. Particularly if the correlations fall off slowly with distance, or if fluctuations exist on several length scales, one finds that the macroscopic longitudinal resistivity Rxx is only weakly dependent on ρxx and is approximately propo...
